There are now six challenges for 2012, the Miniature Challenge, the
Art Quilt Challenge,
the Wearable Art Challenge, the Quilts of Honor challenge, the
Apron Challenge, and the Handbag Challenge. Be sure
to check the details for each challenge below. All
challenges are due at the No meeting, Nov 8, except the Art
Quilt Challenge. The Art Quilt Challenge is due for our
show in Feb.
Those in charge of each challenge need to work together to keep
all challenges consistent with each other. There will not
be any hired judges for these challenges; use guild members as
judges. Awards must be kept consistent across all
challenges.
The miniature challenge this year goes along with the 2012 show
theme "Tides of Time". Some of the rules include using three
Northwind blocks in the design and colors that make you think of
water, ocean, beach, etc. The quilts must be 18" or less
in both width and length.

contact Helen Hardwick if you plan on participating in this
challenge. Also contact Helen for any
questions on this block. Helen will also be happy to help
you with tips on making a tiny Northwind block.
The art quilt challenge, also known as the Emma Allebes Art
Quilt Challenge, honors Emma Allebes, a creative and giving
guild member who passed away in 2009. This years theme for
the art quilt challenge will be "Landscapes", either realistic
portrayals or an "out of the box" image of some landscape that
only exists in the artist's imagination. An added twist
for this challenge is that you must include a finished piece of
some fabric that you've created yourself by photo tricks, dying,
painting, stamping, weaving, felting or any other way. The
quilts must be less than 40 inches and no smaller than 18
inches on a side. The art Quilt Challenge is due at the
time of our show in Feb. Contact Donna Brennan for any questions
on this challenge.
The theme of the 2011 Wearable Art Challenge is "Recycle
Wearable Art". This years challenge is to recycle a readymade, off the rack,
garment and make it into a wearable art garment. You may
recycle a coat, vest, shirt, dress, pants or even a sweatshirt.
If you would like to participate in this challenge, you'll need
to purchase a kit for $10 which includes the challenge fabric
and beads. The challenge fabric is a fat quarter, 100% cotton, Marble Mate
by Moda. The original garment must be visible on the outside of the
finished garment. The challenge fabric and beads must be used
on the outside of the garment and visible. You may not alter
the challenge fabric. You do not have to use all of the beads.
There are five different kinds of beads and were purchased at U
Bead It. The challenge will be presented to the guild at the
November meeting.
Contact Jean Trojan for the details on the Wearable Art
Challenge and to purchase the challenge kit.
Contact Carmen Mitchell for the details on the Quilts of Honor
Challenge.
She has a panel that must be included in your quilt.
The 2012 Apron Challenge is to take something that is used
(perhaps something from a thrift shop or the back of your
closet) and re-cycle it into an apron. There are three
categories including Fun and Frivolous, Everything Old is New
Again, and Apron Elegance. You get to interpret the
categories!
Contact Karla Dellner for the details on the Apron
Challenge.
The Handbag Challenge includes five categories. The
categories are Babies to Go, A Night on the Town, Go Green (made
to promote recycling or made from recycled material), Tripping
it Up, and Day by Day. The bag must be handcrafted.
The bag may only be entered in one category. Each category
will have a winner.
Contact Becky Zsoka for the details on the Handbag
Challenge.
