![]() Bonus Summer Embroidery Workshop
June 7, 2023 10AM - 2PM Add color, texture and charm to a vintage magnolia illustration when you embellish its botanical imagery with embroidery! Join artist and maker Robert Mahar in learning core embroidery basics, essential stitches and how to apply them to his design custom printed on a 18x27” panel of linen cotton canvas. The end result is a beautifully embroidered textile that can be displayed as a wall hanging or utilized as a tea towel. Instruction will set participants up for success so that they can begin their individual projects in class and complete them at home. The illustration of the cup and saucer varietal, Magnolia campbellii bloom, was sourced from an 1855 volume of scientific sketches in the collection of the New York Public Library. It has been digitally restored and paired with a tea cup illustration of the same era along with minimalist typography - creating the perfect canvas for your embroidery embellishment. This workshop is a unique approach to needlework utilizing a nontraditional, free-form sampler that allows you utilize your favorite stitches and determine their placement. This class is well suited for beginners, however, students with more embroidery experience are encouraged to join for a fun refresher course and the opportunity to apply their skills to a large-format botanical graphic. All materials are included and will be provided to participants when they arrive for the workshop. Each material kit includes a custom 27x18” linen cotton sampler, a limited palette of 6-strand embroidery floss, wood embroidery hoop, embroidery needle, practice fabric, instructional diagrams and a sharpened pencil. Please note! If you have favorite embroidery tools or prefer specific colors of embroidery floss (6-strand or perle cotton) you are encouraged to bring these items with you to the workshop. Workshop will be held at a private home in Roseville, California. Directions and location will be provided after payment is received. All payments must be received by May 15, 2023. |

A Lesson in Every Quilt Kristen will discuss and describe the lessons learned in over 40 of her quilts. She'll even share her "ugliest" quilt Most of her quits were made using the "quilt-as-you-go" method, but she reviews and shares other quilt methods and techniques she's used over the years. Check out more of her work at kristinlaura.com. |
Kristen began quilting in 1999 when her best friend, Wendy was pregnant. She made a baby quilt from her bridesmaid dress from Wendy's wedding. After the stressful endeavor of creating a baby quilt using fabric from a purple acetate dress, her first quilt turned out and was much loved by Wendy and her son Gavin.
After that experience, she decided to pursue quilting as a hobby. It was a colorful and creative outlet to balance with her career as a computer programmer. One of the quilt shop managers she came to know talked her into teaching the sewing machine mastery courses they provided with the purchase of a new machine. She only "met" one machine that stumped her - the manual was in Italian and the machine was less than intuitive. Kristen was soon hooked on the “quilt-as-you-go” or “reversible” quilting techniques. After participating in a number of block-of-the-month programs, she designed a setting for the completed blocks that would make use of the quilt-as-you-go technique. When shown to the ladies at the quilt shop, they insisted she create and teach a class, and her “Finish Your Block-of-the Month” class was born. It continues to be a very popular class, and the success of that class has led her to design other quilts based on the technique. |

9AM - 1PM Reversible Quilt Workshop Using the “quilt-as-you-go” method, you will create a beautiful two-sided quilt. Each two-sided block is pieced and quilted at the same time, then you will put the blocks together using a special sashing technique. Select two complementary schemes for the two sides of your quilt, or go wild with two completely different looks! This is a great technique for quilting larger quilts in smaller, manageable sections. You will learn everything you need to complete your quilt during this class. |
